My house burned down in 2008 in a wildfire and since then I’ve been hyper sensitive to/aware of flaming buildings. So on Monday when I saw smoke erupting from a house on the opposite side of the building from the chimney, I decided to call 911 to report it. However, soon after dialing the number, the smoke started to subside and I realized that what I was seeing was likely smoke from a BBQ.
The proceeding phone call went something like this:
Dispatch woman: Mam can you tell me what you see?
Me: Umm, well there was a bunch of black smoke, but it’s not on the side of the chimney and well it seems to be going away, but I’ve been watching a lot of Law & Order lately and I know people don’t always call to report this because they think someone else already has (in fact there is an SVU episode on that subject) and ummm I am just trying to do my civic duty, I am no fire expert, umm so what do you think?
Dispatch woman: Can you see flames?
Me: No flames, actually it seems to be getting a lot better, yeah, I don’t know maybe it’s not a fire, oopsies. But come check it out if you feel like it, okay sorry, BYE
I fail at life. I rule at law & order.
